Our lettering is raised from the canvas, which is part of what makes a Letters in Linen piece feel handcrafted. In the Canvas Builder, you choose how far the letters lift: subtle raised or bold raised. The preview shows the difference with soft shadows.
Subtle raised: a gentle lift
Subtle raised lettering sits close to the surface. It reads as quiet and refined, and it makes an understated piece. It suits soft, tonal colour pairings, and rooms where you want the canvas to blend in as a detail. It also looks lovely with longer text, where heavy relief would feel busy.
Bold raised: strong relief
Bold raised lettering stands further out, with deeper shadows and more dimension. It is the choice for a statement piece, and for short words that you want to command attention. Our gallery’s Welcome to Our Home shows how much presence deep relief gives a few simple words.
How light changes the choice
Raised letters create shadows, and shadows depend on light. In a room with strong daylight from the side, even subtle lettering throws a clear shadow, and bold lettering looks sculptural. In a dim room with soft, even light, bold relief keeps the letters visible, while subtle may fade into the background. Think about where the canvas will hang and what the light usually does there.
Pair it with colour
If lettering and canvas are close in colour, depth does the work that contrast would do, so lean toward bold. If the two colours contrast strongly, subtle is usually enough, because the colour already makes the words clear.
Pair it with size
Large letters on a big canvas can carry bold relief beautifully. Small letters, especially on a Small canvas, often look best subtle, since heavy relief can crowd narrow strokes.
A simple rule of thumb
Short words, big canvas, calm colours: go bold. Longer text, smaller canvas, strong colours: go subtle. If you are still unsure, switch between the two in the Builder, and tell us your thoughts in the notes when you send your design. We are always happy to talk it through.
