In step two of the Canvas Builder you choose a surface, and it changes the character of the whole piece. The two options are smooth, a clean, flat canvas, and textured, a plaster-like, sculpted finish. Neither is better. They simply say different things.
What smooth looks like
A smooth surface is crisp and graphic. The letters and the background are clearly separate, and the eye reads the words first. It suits colour contrast, such as black on white or gold on navy, and it feels at home in modern rooms with clean lines. If you want the design to look sharp and precise, choose smooth.
What textured looks like
A textured surface has a hand-finished, plaster-like feel. It catches the light unevenly, so the canvas looks slightly different from morning to evening. It gives a tonal piece, such as white lettering on a white canvas, a quiet richness that colour alone cannot. Pieces like Welcome to Our Home and Always & Forever show the effect.
Match the surface to your room
Look at what is already on your walls and floors:
- A room full of texture (woven rugs, wood, linen, stone) often calls for smooth, which gives the eye somewhere to rest.
- A room that is pale, simple and slightly flat often benefits from textured, which adds depth without adding colour.
- Rooms with strong, saturated colours usually suit smooth, because the colour is already doing the talking.
Match the surface to your words
Short, emotional words such as a name, a home or a date suit textured, because the surface adds warmth. Longer phrases, or words you want to read quickly across a room, suit smooth, because there is less visual noise.
It works with lettering depth
Surface and depth work together. A textured canvas with bold raised lettering gives the strongest relief. A smooth canvas with subtle raised lettering is the most restrained combination. Our guide to subtle or bold raised lettering helps you choose the second half of the pair.
You can switch between smooth and textured in the Builder as often as you like, and watch the preview change.
