Portrait, Landscape or Square: Choosing Your Canvas Shape

By Letters in Linen · · 2 min read

Shape is the first choice in the Canvas Builder, and it quietly decides how your words will sit. The same sentence can feel elegant in portrait, relaxed in landscape and bold in square. Here is how to think about it.

Let the words suggest the shape

Look at how your text breaks into lines. A phrase that stacks naturally into three or four short lines, such as a name, a date and a few words, suits portrait. A single long line, such as a sentence you would read across, suits landscape. A word or a short two-line phrase, especially one you want to feel balanced and centred, often looks best on square.

Our gallery gives you real examples. A wide piece like Relax and Unwind uses the width to stack its words generously, while the compact Family Means Everything is square and sits as a neat block.

Let the wall suggest it too

Think about the space you are filling:

  • Narrow gaps (beside a door, in an alcove, on a landing) welcome portrait.
  • Wide, low spaces (above a sideboard, a sofa or a bed) welcome landscape.
  • Awkward or central spots (a chimney breast, a gap between two windows) are often well served by square.

If the wall has strong vertical lines, such as a tall window or shelving, a portrait canvas echoes them. If the room is dominated by long horizontals, such as a sofa or a long table, landscape continues the line.

Think about how it will be seen

A portrait canvas draws the eye up and makes a ceiling feel higher. A landscape canvas draws the eye across and makes a wall feel wider. Square sits still and feels settled, which is why it suits quiet, minimal rooms.

Try them side by side

The easiest way to decide is to switch shape in the Builder while keeping your text the same. Watch how the words rewrap, and how much breathing room there is around them. Pick the version where the letters feel comfortable, not squeezed.

When you have chosen, move on to the size. Our guide to canvas sizes explained covers the groups in the Builder, from Small to Extra Large.
