Pairs and Triptychs: Designing Two or Three Canvases as One

By Letters in Linen · · 3 min read

One wide wall, a long sofa or a big bed can be hard to fill with a single canvas. A pair or a set of three solves it, and it lets your words travel across the wall. With the Canvas Builder you can design each canvas to work with the others.

Choose the layout first

The simplest layouts are:

  • A pair, two canvases the same size, hung side by side.
  • A triptych, three canvases the same size in a row.
  • A pair with a gap, two canvases with wider space between, so they read as two halves of a thought.

Keep the sizes identical at first. Equal canvases hold together, and you can always vary them later.

Split the words

There are three good ways to divide your words:

  • Each canvas holds one word or phrase, and they read left to right.
  • A single sentence is divided across the canvases, one clause each.
  • Each canvas carries a separate, related word, such as three words that sum up a home.

Our gallery’s Good Vibes shows how few words a large canvas needs, and that idea works just as well when split across a set.

Match everything else

For the canvases to read as one piece, keep these the same on each:

  • The shape and size.
  • The surface, smooth or textured.
  • The lettering depth.
  • The colours.
  • The position and alignment of the words.

Differences in the words are enough. Differences in everything else look accidental.

Space them evenly

Leave a consistent gap, usually 5 to 8 cm, between canvases. Hang them so the centre of the group is at around 145 to 150 cm from the floor. Measure from the centre outwards, and mark each hook before you drive any nails. A paper template for each one makes this much easier.

Order them together

When you send the designs, mention in the notes that they form a set, and send them in the same conversation. We will be in touch within 24 hours, and we can talk through any details.

When to choose a single canvas instead

If your words are one connected line, a single wide canvas keeps them together. Our guide to creating a gallery wall covers bigger arrangements.
