Canvas Ideas for Small Spaces and Rented Homes

By Letters in Linen · · 3 min read

A small room, or a home you do not own, asks more of every piece you bring into it. The walls are limited, the rules may be strict, and every object has to earn its place. A well-chosen canvas can do a great deal in these conditions. Here is how to approach it with the Canvas Builder.

Go for one piece with a purpose

In a small space, one canvas with a clear idea beats several competing pieces. Choose a single, short phrase, set at a confident size, and give it room on the wall. White or light canvases with a textured surface add depth without adding visual weight.

Choose a size in proportion

A Medium canvas is often right in a small room. A very large canvas can feel like it is pressing in. If you love the idea of something bigger, keep the lettering simple and the colours light, so the piece does not feel heavy.

Lean it, don’t hang it

If you cannot, or do not want to, put holes in the wall, a canvas can lean. A shelf, a mantelpiece, a chest of drawers or a windowsill can all hold a canvas upright. A Small or Medium canvas leaning against the wall has a relaxed, lived-in look. Make sure it is stable, and keep it away from edges where it could fall.

Check your tenancy before you hang

If you do hang a canvas in a rented home, check what your agreement says about fixing things to walls. Some landlords allow small nails or picture hooks, and others prefer adhesive options. If you use anything adhesive, check the weight it can carry, since a canvas has a real weight. For fixing options in general, see hanging a canvas safely.

Use words that travel

A canvas that moves with you should make sense in the next home too. Names, dates and phrases about people carry well. A phrase about a particular room or address will not. If you move often, choose words that belong to you, and not to a place.

Choose neutral colours

If you rent, you may change the colour of the walls with each move. Neutral canvas and lettering colours, such as black, white and soft tones, go with nearly everything. Tell us if you want to match a particular shade, and open the Builder to try a few combinations.
