A Canvas Above the Bed: What Works and What to Say

By Letters in Linen · · 3 min read

A canvas above the bed is the first thing you see when you wake and often the last thing you see at night. That makes the choice of words more personal than anywhere else in the house. Here is how to design one in the Canvas Builder that feels right.

Choose calm words

The words above a bed set the tone for rest. Gentle, steady phrases work best: something about home, a name, a date, a quiet line that settles the mind. High-energy slogans tend to be tiring to see before sleep. Many people choose the names of the people who share the room.

Size to the bed, not the wall

As above a sofa, a good rule is about two-thirds the width of the bed, or of the headboard. For a double bed of around 140 cm, that means a canvas around 90 to 100 cm wide. A Large landscape canvas, about 76 x 51 cm up to 91 x 61 cm, is often just right. For a king size bed, consider an Extra Large piece or a pair.

Choose landscape or a set

Landscape follows the line of the bed. A pair of portrait or square canvases, one either side of the centre, can also look beautiful and gives you the chance to split the words across the two. Our guide to pairs and triptychs explains how.

Soft colours, soft surface

A bedroom benefits from gentle colour and a quiet surface. A textured canvas in tonal soft colours, with subtle raised lettering, has a restful quality. Our guide to soft colours for calm bedrooms goes into more detail.

Hang it securely

A canvas above a bed should be hung with proper fixings and checked, since it sits above where people sleep. Use fixings rated for the weight of the canvas and suited to your wall, and avoid relying on a single small nail. Our guide to hanging a canvas safely covers the basics.

Mind the gap

Hang the canvas so there are about 20 to 25 cm between the top of the headboard and the bottom of the canvas. If you have no headboard, leave around 20 to 30 cm above the pillows, and centre it on the bed.

Keep the wall balanced

A canvas above the bed should be centred on the bed, not on the wall, unless the bed is centred on the wall too. Use a spirit level, and step back to check.
