Kitchens and dining rooms are where a home actually lives. People eat, argue, laugh and linger there, which makes them one of the best places for a canvas with personality. They also have particular needs, from steam and grease to a lot of looking. Here is how to design a canvas for this room in the Canvas Builder.
Words that belong at a table
The best kitchen words are warm, short and a little playful. Ideas include:
- The family name, set simply.
- A line about gathering, sharing or being hungry.
- A phrase from a family recipe or a tradition.
- A short rule for the room, in a friendly voice.
Our guide to family sayings and house rules helps turn a family joke into something that looks good.
Pick a size for the wall you have
Kitchen walls are often broken up by cupboards and windows, and the free space may be small. A Medium canvas, about 46 x 36 cm up to 56 x 46 cm, is a good fit. In a dining room with a clear wall behind the table, a Large canvas, about 76 x 51 cm and up, can be the focus of the room.
Keep it away from the cooker
Canvases do not like steam, grease or heat. Hang yours at a sensible distance from the hob, the kettle and the sink, and away from places that get splashed. A dining room is generally safer than the cooking end of a kitchen. Our guide to where not to hang a canvas explains why.
Choose colours that work with your cabinets
Pick a lettering colour that echoes your units, handles or worktops, and a canvas colour that does not fight the walls. Neutral and tonal choices are easy to live with, and warm colours suit the room’s sociable mood.
Smooth or textured
A smooth surface is easier to look at in a busy room, and it suits a clean, modern kitchen. A textured surface adds warmth to a plain dining room. Whichever you choose, keep the lettering depth in proportion to the room’s light.
Decide where eyes land
Think about who will see it and when. A canvas facing the table is seen while people eat. A canvas near the door is seen while they leave. Choose the words with that moment in mind. When you are ready, open the Builder and try a few ideas.
