Colour is the decision people worry about most in the Canvas Builder, and it is easier than it looks. You do not need to match everything. You need to connect the canvas to the room with one or two well-chosen links.
Look at the room, not the swatch
Stand in the room, and look at what is already there. Three things matter most: the wall colour, the biggest piece of furniture, and one accent such as a cushion, a rug or a curtain. The canvas does not have to copy any of them. It only has to get along with them.
Use the one-link rule
Pick one colour from the room and use it in one place on the canvas. If the sofa has a deep green cushion, use green for the lettering. If the rug has a warm clay tone, use a soft clay for the canvas. One link is enough to make the piece look chosen.
Decide what the canvas should do
A canvas can have one of three jobs:
- Blend in. Use a canvas colour close to the wall, with a lettering colour a little deeper, and let the words be a subtle detail.
- Contrast. Use a canvas colour that clearly differs from the wall, so the piece stands out as an object.
- Accent. Use a bold lettering colour on a neutral canvas, so the words carry the colour.
Decide which you want before you choose.
Check the wall colour carefully
White walls, pale grey walls and deep coloured walls each ask for different things. On a pale wall, a dark or mid-toned canvas is a strong focal point. On a dark wall, a light canvas glows. On a mid-tone wall, check contrast with care, since tones that are too close disappear.
Keep the palette small
A canvas with two colours, one for the lettering and one for the canvas, has a calm, designed feel. Resist the urge to add a third. Texture and depth can add richness without adding colour. Our guide to choosing lettering and canvas colours covers the contrast side of the decision.
Remember the light
Colours change through the day, and with the light in each room. A north-facing room makes colours look cooler. A sunny room makes them warmer. Look at your wall in the morning and the evening before you decide, and tell us in your notes if you have a paint reference you would like us to match.
