The blank text box in the Canvas Builder can feel intimidating, and many people stall at the very first step. The good news is that you do not need to be clever. The best canvases usually carry words that are already part of someone’s life. Here are places to look.
Start with something that already exists
Before writing anything new, look for words that are already yours:
- A name, a surname or a nickname.
- A date: a wedding, a birth, a move into a new home.
- A place: the name of a house, a town or a favourite beach.
- A phrase someone in the family says all the time.
- A line from a card, a letter or a toast that stayed with you.
Our gallery has a good spread of this idea. Welcome to Our Home is a phrase everyone knows, and Family Means Everything is a belief most households share.
Ask three questions
If nothing comes, ask yourself:
- Who is it for? Yourself, a partner, a parent, a friend?
- Where will it hang? A hallway wants a welcome, a bedroom wants calm, a kitchen wants warmth or humour.
- What should someone feel when they walk past it?
The answers usually point at the words. A hallway canvas for visitors might say something about home. A bedroom canvas for yourself might say something about rest.
Say it out loud
Read your idea aloud, and listen to its rhythm. Words that sound good spoken usually look good on a canvas. Cut anything that sounds like a slogan, and keep anything that sounds like a person.
Keep it short enough to set large
A custom canvas is read from a distance, so fewer words nearly always look better. If your idea runs past about ten words, look for the part that matters most. Our guide to how many words fit on a canvas explains what each size can carry.
Test it before you commit
Type your best two or three options into the Builder and flip between them. Seeing the words in position, at the size and colour you want, makes the choice much easier. When you have found the one, send it in, and we will check it with you before anything is made.
