Disney quote lettering canvas with gold leaf

A good lettering canvas is the result of seven small decisions made in the right order. Each of them is a setting in the Canvas Builder, so you can try a choice, see it in the live preview, and change your mind before anything is made.

1. Start with the words

Everything else follows from the text, so settle it first. Say it out loud, count the lines, and ask whether every word earns its place. Shorter almost always looks better, because short text can be set larger.

2. Choose the shape to suit the words

A tall phrase, stacked in short lines, suits portrait. A single long line suits landscape. A one-word statement or a name often looks best on square. You choose this in the first step, and the preview adjusts straight away.

3. Pick the size for the room

Think about where the canvas will hang, and how far away you will see it from. If it will be viewed across a room, go larger than you think. If you want to see it close up, such as on a landing or beside a desk, a Small or Medium canvas is ideal.

4. Set the text size and position

Larger lettering has more impact, but it needs breathing room. The Builder lets you choose where the words sit (top, middle or bottom) and how they align (left, centre or right). Centred text feels formal and calm. Left-aligned text feels modern and relaxed. Placing the words low on the canvas leaves space above, which can feel quietly confident.

5. Choose colours with enough contrast

Contrast keeps text readable. Dark on light and light on dark both work, while two mid-tones tend to disappear. If you want a tonal look, add contrast through the surface and lettering depth rather than through the colours.

6. Decide on surface and depth

A smooth surface looks clean and graphic. A textured surface, with its plaster-like finish, adds warmth and depth. Then choose how far the letters lift off the canvas: subtle for a gentle effect, bold for strong relief. Raised letters look different with the light, so think about where your window is.

7. Check it before you send it

Read your text aloud one last time, check spelling and line breaks, and make sure the colour pairing is clear. Because each canvas is made to your design, we ask you to check the mockup carefully before approving production.

When you are ready, open the Canvas Builder, work through the steps, and send your design for a quote. We will be in touch within 24 hours.
