Turning a Favourite Song Lyric into a Canvas

By Letters in Linen · · 3 min read

A lyric can carry more feeling than almost any other kind of wording, because it brings the music with it. Looking at a line from your first dance or a song you played on repeat, you hear it. That is exactly why lyrics make such personal canvases, and why a few choices make the difference between a lovely piece and a cluttered one. Our gallery piece Can’t Help Falling in Love is an example of a single lyric line set on its own.

Choose one line, not a verse

A canvas is read at a glance, so a full verse rarely works. Pick the single line that means the most, or one line plus the next if they belong together. Everything else can stay in the song.

Pick the line that works without the music

Some lines depend on the melody to make sense. Others stand alone as sentences. Read your line without humming it, and ask whether it still moves you. If it does, it will work on a wall.

Think about the person, not just the song

If the canvas is a gift, choose the line that means something to the two of you, not the most famous line. A less obvious lyric, tied to a memory, has far more meaning than the chorus everyone knows.

Set it for rhythm

Lyrics have natural pauses. Break the line where the singer breathes, so the shape of the text on the canvas follows the shape of the sound. In the Canvas Builder, line breaks are kept, so you can stack the words in short lines and centre them for a lyrical feel. Our guide to line breaks and the shape of your words shows how.

Add the source quietly, or leave it out

You may want to add the song title or the artist in small letters below the lyric, or a date that connects it to a moment. This works best when kept small and set apart. If you are unsure, leave it out, and let the words stand alone.

Tell us where the words come from

When you send your design, mention in the notes if the words come from a song, and tell us anything you would like to keep exactly as written, such as spelling or punctuation. We will check the details with you before anything is made.
