Poems are made for the page, not the wall, and that is the challenge. A page can hold twenty lines comfortably. A canvas, viewed from across a room, cannot. The skill is in choosing what to keep. These steps help you shorten a poem without losing what made you love it.
Find the line that carries the poem
Read the poem through twice, and underline the line you would quote to someone if you only had one breath. Often a poem has a heart: a single image or sentence the rest builds towards. That line is where to begin.
Keep the complete thought
Cutting is not the same as chopping. A phrase that stops half-way feels like a mistake. Choose a section that begins and ends on a natural pause, so the extract feels finished. Two lines that belong together are better than five lines cut off.
Honour the line breaks
Poets choose where each line ends. On a canvas, those breaks give the text its shape, so try to keep them. In the Canvas Builder, your line breaks are preserved, so you can set the extract exactly as it appears in the poem.
Match the size to the length
Four short lines can sit beautifully on a Medium canvas. Eight lines will need a Large or an Extra Large piece, or smaller lettering. Our guide to how many words fit on a canvas gives a rough sense of what each size can carry.
Use alignment to match the voice
Centred lines suit formal, traditional verse. Left-aligned lines suit modern, conversational poems, as they appear in print. A poem that rhymes strongly usually looks best centred, and a poem in free verse can feel more natural on the left.
Credit the poet thoughtfully
Many people like to add the poet’s name below the extract. If you do, keep it small and set it a line below, so it does not compete with the words themselves. Tell us in your notes where the words come from.
Consider writing your own
You do not need a famous poem. A few lines you wrote for a person, a wedding or a new baby can make the most meaningful canvas of all. Start with the Builder, type your lines, and see how they sit.
