There is a quiet confidence in a canvas with one word. It does not explain itself. It does not need to. Because there is only one thing to read, the letters can be set at their largest, and the surface, the depth and the colour do the rest of the talking. If you are tempted by this, the Canvas Builder is the perfect place to try it.
Choose a word with weight
Single words work best when they carry a feeling or a place. Think of words you would say aloud with meaning: a name, a place, a value, a direction. Our gallery’s Good Vibes uses a short phrase at 150 x 100 cm, and shows how little text a large canvas needs.
Go big
A single word is the one situation where the largest text size is nearly always right. Set it large, and let the canvas edge come close to the letters, leaving only a little breathing room. A big word on a big canvas has real presence, so consider an Extra Large size if the wall allows it.
Let the surface add interest
With so little text, the finish matters more. A textured surface, with its plaster-like depth, gives a single word something to rest on. A smooth surface makes it look graphic and modern. Pair either with bold raised lettering to give the word real dimension.
Think about the shape
Short words that are wide, such as WELCOME or HOME, suit landscape and square canvases. Tall, narrow words stacked letter by letter on portrait are a bolder, more graphic choice, but need a confident room.
Keep the colours simple
One word needs no help from complicated colour. Black on white, white on a textured white canvas, or gold on a deep tone all let the word speak. If the colours are tonal, let the depth carry the contrast.
Try a pair
Two single-word canvases hung side by side, such as the two halves of a pair of words, can look striking and gives you twice the impact. If you are drawn to the idea, pairs and triptychs shows how to space and match them. To begin, open the Builder, type one word, and see how much room it takes.
