Retirement, Leaving and Thank-You Canvases: Words for a Group Gift

When a colleague retires or a teacher leaves, a group gift is often a card and a voucher. A canvas can be more lasting, because it carries words that say what everyone feels, and the person can hang it up. The Canvas Builder is well suited to this kind of gift, since the design can be shared before it is sent.

Choose words that suit a group

A group gift needs wording everyone can stand behind. Short and warm works best:

• A simple thank you, with the person’s name.
• The years of service, set large.
• A phrase the whole team uses.
• The name of the school, class or team.

Avoid in-jokes that only a few people understand, since the canvas needs to make sense to everyone who signs it.

Add the names

If space allows, a short list of the contributors’ names at the bottom, in small lettering, makes the canvas feel like it came from people. A very long list needs a large canvas, so for a big group consider a Large or Extra Large size, or put the names on a card beside the gift.

Keep the design simple

A group gift is seen by many, so a classic, calm design tends to suit everyone. Black on white, or white on a textured white canvas, is a safe and elegant choice. Gold can add a sense of occasion for a long career.

Organise it properly

Appoint one person to submit the design, so there is a single conversation with us. Collect the words, agree the final text, and check the spelling of every name before it goes in. Our guide to proofreading your canvas text gives a checklist.

Allow for the timeline

A leaving date is not flexible, and production can take up to 20 business days after confirmation and payment, before delivery. Start as soon as you know the date, and include it in your first message.

Think about where it will go

A retiree may hang it at home, in a study or a hallway. A teacher may keep it at school or take it home. A medium canvas is easy to carry and easy to hang. Open the Builder, type the words everyone agrees on, and choose a calm design.
