New Baby and Nursery Canvases: Names, Dates and Gentle Words

A nursery canvas is often the first piece of art in a child’s life, and it tends to stay with the family for years. Because it carries a name, it also works as a keepsake for the day they were born. Here is how to set one up in the Canvas Builder.

What to put on it

Most nursery canvases are quiet. They do not need a lot of words, and the best ones are close to a record of the day:

• The baby’s name, set large.
• The date of birth, and perhaps the time.
• A short wish or a line the parents have chosen.
• The family surname, for a canvas that stays when the child grows up.

If you are giving it as a gift, check the spelling of the name with a parent, since it is easy to assume incorrectly.

Soft colours

Think about longevity

A nursery canvas should survive the nursery. Choose colours and words that will still suit the room when it becomes a toddler’s room, and then a child’s. Names and dates last. Gentle baby-specific phrases may fade sooner than the child does.

Choose a size that suits the wall

A Medium canvas suits the wall above a changing table or beside a cot. A Large canvas suits above a bed or a chest of drawers. Because a baby’s room is often small, a smaller canvas with generous space around it often looks better than a big one.

Hang it safely

Time it with the birth

Babies do not keep to a schedule, but you can plan for the main event.
