A wedding or anniversary canvas is a gift with a long memory. It marks a day, but it also becomes part of the home that follows. Because the words are so personal, a custom piece is far better than anything off the shelf. Here is a way to work through it in the Canvas Builder.

Words that suit a wedding

You rarely need much. Some ideas:

• The couple’s names, or their shared surname, with the wedding date.
• A single line from the vows, chosen for its meaning, not its length.
• The words from a first dance, a toast or a reading.
• A short phrase that belongs to the two of them.

Anniversaries: let the number lead

For an anniversary, a number can be the whole design. The year count, the year itself, or the traditional material for that anniversary can be set large, with the names and date smaller below. Our guide to names, dates and coordinates explains how to stack them well.

Choose a finish that feels special

For a wedding, a textured surface in soft white, with bold raised lettering, has a quiet, ceremonial feel. Gold or silver lettering on a deep colour feels celebratory. If the couple’s home is modern and graphic, smooth with strong contrast may suit them better.

Pick the right size

A Medium canvas suits a gift for a bedroom or hallway. A Large canvas suits above a bed or a sofa, and gives a longer vow room to breathe. If you are giving it as a couple’s first big piece, aim for a size that suits a main wall.

Timing matters

A wedding date cannot move, and production can take up to 20 business days once your order is confirmed and paid for, plus delivery. Order well ahead, and put the date at the top of your notes.

Make it a series
