Words that work for a new home

Think about what a new homeowner feels in the first weeks: hope, a bit of chaos, pride. Words that carry those feelings are the best. Ideas include:

• The family surname with the year they moved in.
• The name of the house or the street.
• A short line about beginnings.

If you are unsure what suits them, choose a name and a date. Facts are hard to get wrong.

Choose a size that fits an unknown wall

You may not have seen their walls yet. A Medium canvas (about 46 x 36 cm up to 56 x 46 cm) is the safest bet, because it fits a hallway, a kitchen, a landing or above a console table. Avoid very large sizes unless you know the space.

Pick colours that suit most homes

Soft neutrals, black and white, or white on a textured white canvas suit nearly every interior. If you know their palette, echo one colour from it. If you do not, neutral and tonal choices are the safest.

Think about where it will go
