When you reach the surface step in the Canvas Builder, you choose between smooth and textured. Smooth is easy to picture. Textured is described as a plaster-like, sculpted finish, which is harder to imagine. This guide explains what it means in plain terms.
The idea in one sentence
A textured canvas has a hand-finished surface with gentle variation, a little like fine plaster on a wall, instead of the even, flat finish of a standard canvas. The surface has peaks and soft hollows that catch the light.
How it looks
Look at our gallery pieces Always & Forever and Welcome to Our Home. The surface is not uniform. In places it is lighter, in others it is shaded, and the effect changes with the light. A smooth canvas looks the same from every angle. A textured one does not.
How it feels
Textured surfaces have a tactile quality. If you ran a hand over the canvas, you would feel the variation. That is part of the appeal: it is an object as well as an image.
Why people choose it
Texture adds depth without adding colour, which is why it suits quiet, tonal rooms. It gives a plain white canvas interest. It adds warmth to a cool room, and suits homes that prefer natural, handmade qualities. Our guide to white on white textured canvases shows how far this can go.
When smooth is the better choice
A smooth surface suits crisp, graphic designs, bold colour contrast and busy rooms where you want the eye to rest. Our guide to choosing smooth or textured helps you decide.
How it works with raised lettering
Texture and raised lettering work as a pair. The letters stand out from the surface, and both catch the light. Together they create the characteristic Letters in Linen look. You can combine textured with either subtle or bold raised lettering, depending on how much relief you want.
Things to know
Each textured canvas is made by hand, so there will be natural variation, and no two surfaces are exactly identical. That is part of what makes it handcrafted.
