Metallic touches have a reputation for being showy, but done with restraint, they are one of the most elegant things you can add to a canvas. A little gold on black, or silver on white, changes the way the piece catches the light. Here is how to use it well, whether you are choosing a gold lettering colour in the Canvas Builder or looking at the foil work in our gallery.
Where metallic works best
Metallic looks richest against a dark background. Gold on black or deep navy is dramatic, and gold flecks across a dark canvas give it a sense of occasion. Our gallery piece Family Means Everything is a good example, with gold foil on a black canvas, and Disney Quote also uses gold foil to lift a fine detail.
Gold or silver
Gold is warm. It suits cosy rooms, wood tones, brass fittings and warm whites. Silver is cool. It suits grey, blue and contemporary rooms, and pairs well with chrome and glass. Look at the metal finishes already in your room, such as taps, handles and lamp bases, and choose the one that matches.
Use it for the words, not the whole canvas
A metallic touch is strongest when it is only part of the design. Gold lettering on a dark canvas is a confident choice. Gold on a gold or yellow-toned canvas loses its effect. Keep the canvas colour plain, so the metallic can stand out.
Think about the light
Metallic surfaces respond to light, and change with the time of day. A canvas by a window will shift in character as the sun moves. A canvas in a dim corner may look flat. Our guide to how light changes raised lettering explains how raised lettering adds to the effect.
Pair it with a calm surface
If the lettering is metallic, keep the rest of the design simple. A smooth surface and subtle raised lettering let the metallic do the talking. A textured surface with metallic lettering is richer, and works in rooms that can carry it.
Keep it to one accent
One metallic element looks chosen. Two or three can look overworked. If you love the idea of gold, avoid adding a second metallic in the same piece. Our guide to dark walls and black canvases shows how this looks in a room.
