A canvas with raised lettering and a textured surface needs a little more care than a flat print, because the surface has detail that can collect dust or catch on things. Looking after it is simple, and a few habits keep it looking good for years. This is general guidance. If you have a specific question about your piece, ask us.
Dust gently and regularly
Dust settles in the grooves and along the edges of raised letters, and on textured surfaces. Brush it away gently with a soft, dry brush, such as a clean make-up brush or a soft artist’s brush, working lightly. Avoid rubbing hard, since friction can mark a raised surface.
Skip the sprays and damp cloths
Avoid household cleaners, polish sprays and damp cloths on the canvas. Moisture and chemicals can mark or soften a finish. If something does land on it, take advice before trying to clean it.
Keep it away from moisture
Steam and damp are not kind to a canvas. Our guide to where not to hang a canvas lists the rooms and spots to avoid, such as bathrooms and the area above a hob.
Mind the sun
Strong direct sunlight, day after day, can fade colours over time. If your canvas hangs where the sun hits it, consider moving it, or shading the window at the brightest part of the day. Gentle side light, by contrast, is good for raised lettering. That is covered in how light changes raised lettering.
Watch the temperature
Sudden or extreme changes in temperature can stress a finish. Avoid hanging a canvas directly over a radiator, a fireplace or a heat source.
Handle with care
When you move the canvas, hold it by the sides of the frame, not by the front surface or the raised lettering. Lay it face up, or lean it carefully, with nothing pressed against the front.
What to do if something happens
If your canvas arrives damaged, or has a defect, tell us within 7 days of delivery and send photographs, and we will replace it. For anything that happens later, such as a mark or a chip, contact us and we will advise on what is best.
A little attention goes a long way
Regular, gentle dusting and a sensible spot on the wall are most of what your canvas needs. If you are about to design one, open the Canvas Builder, and think about where it will live.
